Thank you for allowing me to address the board this evening.
I’m Darien Wilson, a parent in Douglas County, speaking on behalf of Douglas County Parents, a community organization established to inform the community of the issues surrounding our school district.
We would like to express our dismay with the contract extensions for the interim superintendent and cabinet members.
While we acknowledge that Superintendent Kane is well-liked, due to her lack of education credentials and experience, she has delegated the majority of her duties to those serving under her. Additionally, her appointment of fellow Leadership Program of the Rockies alumnus as district legal counsel reeks of cronyism.
She and those serving under her have now been asked to:
• fix the teacher evaluation system,
• improve the climate and culture in the district,
• evaluate and align the World Class Outcomes
• and restore trust with the community.
Who was responsible for implementing the systems and culture that have now been deemed fatally flawed?
The very same reformers we are now expected to trust to correct and improve them.
Teachers and Principals are saddled with flawed and ever changing evaluation systems, in classes that are too large (there are almost thirty children in my five year old’s kindergarten class), in buildings that are deteriorating. To offer teachers a half percent stipend while at the same time giving contract extensions, raises, and ten to twenty percent retention bonuses to upper administration is a gut punch to the dedicated teachers and principals who have remained in our district. They are the ones who are keeping this district afloat.
Common sense tells us that incompetence should not be rewarded. A contract through December 31 of this year, or month-to-month extensions of contracts are sufficient to get us through the 2017 election, after which we can attract the best candidates for the job.
