Read to the Board of Education
March 25, 2014
My name is Katie Stahl, formerly Katie Vogel. I attended kindergarten through high school in Douglas County and graduated in 2009 from Highlands Ranch High School.
This past May, I graduated cum laude from the University of Colorado with my BS in chemical and biological engineering. My husband, Greg Stahl also graduated from HRHS in 2006 and Graduated with his Bachelors and Masters degree in Electrical engineering from CU.
While we both feel that we were very well prepared for our difficult programs, I am afraid Douglas County has since lost focus of what is the most important issue at hand. Students need to be taught first and foremost to enjoy learning and to be self motivated. This is essential in order to be successful. These two things are highlighted in every job interview I have participated in, both for internships during my education, and since I have graduated.
Unfortunately, this board has taken the focus off of being a great teacher and put the focus on proving that you are a great teacher. If teachers didn’t have to jump through all your hoops, they would have more time to teach and would be more able to effectively meet student needs. As a result students would have the necessary skills to be successful in the workplace like I do.
