Read to the DCSD Board of Education
March 25, 2014
My name is Trevor Vogel. I’m a freshman at HRHS. Over my education, I’ve achieved much success. Right now, I’m tied among 6-8 other Freshman for the highest GPA in my class, and am a devoted Continental League musician. None of my educational success, I believe, is due to any of the “world-class-reform” policies you’ve instituted in DCSD, but rather a result of dedicated teachers and my own self-motivation.
I’m here tonight to convey the concerns felt by teachers, students, and parents across all of Douglas County- specifically the hypocrisy and disrespect perpetuated and practiced by the current DCSD BOE. Members of the current BOE show concern only for themselves and their political agenda- not the education that I and my peers value.
First, I think everyone present would agree that a “world-class” education system would have a BOE that follows the law. As you will continue to deny, I’d like to point out another time how you all have violated the Colorado Fair Campaign Practices Act, and have neither admitted to the crime or brought justice to those involved. I don’t believe any parents want their kids’ role models in education to be criminals.
I’ve been taught not only to listen to people, something I’d advise you to do once in a while, but also to examine the body language and tones of those being observed. I, a 15 year old, have sat in my kitchen many Tuesday nights on the computer to be absolutely appalled by the reactions and rudeness shown by the BOE. If my teachers, those who are in a position of authority, like yourselves, would scroll through emails, mock their students, and interrupt us so frequently, they would surely be terminated. Yet, nothing happens after you consistently do the same things. Any “world-class” school district does not have a division in voters like DCSD.
With 48% of Douglas County voters against your policies, it’s very safe to say you’re doing something wrong. I find it ironic and extremely hypocritical that constituents attending meetings like this one aren’t allowed to show support for each other, yet every member of the BOE are allowed to actively and passively show disapproval towards public comments-whether it be the indifference to what we have to say shown by scrolling on a cell phone, or visually mocking and ridiculing our attempts to voice concern.
I, nor my peers, teachers, and family, will not be passive to your actions, which, if you were to be honest, have no intention of strengthening education, but serve to keep a stacked BOE, further your political agendas, and suppress opinions like mine. The way I see it is that there’s two options- either change your policies, views, and behavior, or get used to a divided population, because we won’t back down.
